Description

This Amish Hamburger Steak Bake is a hearty, comforting casserole made with seasoned ground beef, tender potatoes, and a creamy sauce, all topped with melted cheddar cheese. It’s a perfect one-pan dish for a family dinner or a cozy meal with minimal prep. Rich in flavor and filling, it’s a great choice for satisfying hunger on a busy evening.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 ½ lbs ground beef

  • ½ tsp garlic powder

  • ½ tsp onion powder

  • Salt and pepper to taste

  • 2 cups milk (divided)

  • ¼ cup all-purpose flour

  • 45 medium russet potatoes, thinly sliced

  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced

  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).

  • In a large skillet, cook the ground beef over medium heat, breaking it apart as it cooks. Season with garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Cook until the beef is browned and fully cooked, about 5-7 minutes.

  • In a separate saucepan, combine 1 ½ cups of milk and the flour. Whisk constantly over medium heat until the mixture begins to thicken, about 5-6 minutes. Once thickened, remove from heat.

  • In a greased 9×13-inch baking dish, layer the sliced potatoes and onions.

  • Spread the cooked ground beef evenly over the potatoes and onions.

  • Pour the milk and flour mixture over the beef layer, ensuring the potatoes are evenly covered.

  • Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese over the top.

  • Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes.

  • Remove the foil and continue baking for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender and the cheese is golden and bubbly.

  • Let the dish rest for 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • You can use different types of cheese for variety, such as mozzarella or Monterey Jack.

  • If you prefer extra flavor, add some chopped herbs like parsley or thyme to the beef mixture.
