Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups warm water (110°F/45°C)
- 2/3 cup white sugar
- 1 1/2 tablespoons active dry yeast
- 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
- 1/4 cup vegetable oil
- 6 cups bread flour
Instructions
- Proof the Yeast: In a large bowl, dissolve the sugar in warm water, and stir in yeast. Allow to proof for about 10 minutes, or until yeast resembles a creamy foam.
- Mix the Dough: Mix salt and oil into the yeast mixture. Gradually mix in flour one cup at a time. Knead dough on a lightly floured surface until smooth and elastic.
- First Rise: Place the dough in a well-oiled bowl, turning the dough to coat with oil. Cover with a damp cloth and let it rise until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
- Shape the Loaves: Punch the dough down. Knead for a few minutes, then divide the dough in half. Shape into loaves and place them into two well-oiled 9×5 inch loaf pans. Allow the dough to rise for 30 minutes, or until it has risen 1 inch above the pans.
- Bake: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Bake the loaves for 30 minutes or until golden brown on top and hollow-sounding when tapped.
Notes
- If you don’t have bread flour, all-purpose flour can be used, though the texture may be slightly different.
- For a golden crust, brush the loaves with melted butter after baking.
- This bread freezes well! Simply wrap in plastic wrap and store in an airtight bag or container for up to 3 months.
