Description

Classic, tender butter cookies with a rich, buttery flavor and a delicate crumb. These cookies are perfect for decorating with chocolate and sprinkles, making them ideal for any occasion or gift.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2⅛ cups (260 g) all-purpose flour (see note)

  • ½ tsp salt

  • 1 cup (226 g) unsalted butter, softened but not melted (see note)

  • ½ cup (100 g) white granulated sugar

  • 2 large egg yolks, room temperature

  • 2 tsp vanilla extract or essence

  • ¼ cup (33 g) milk powder (whole milk powder recommended)

  • 1 tsp whole milk (only if needed; optional)

For Decorating (Optional)

  • 1 cup milk chocolate melts or chocolate chips (dark or white chocolate melts also work)

  • Nonpareil sprinkles

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper.

  • In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, salt, and milk powder. Set aside.

  • In a large bowl, cream softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy.

  • Add egg yolks and vanilla extract; beat until well combined.

  • Gradually add dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing just until incorporated. If dough feels too dry, add milk 1 tsp at a time until dough comes together.

  • Roll dough into small balls (about 1 tablespoon each) and place on prepared baking sheets, spaced about 2 inches apart. Flatten slightly with your hand or the bottom of a glass.

  • Bake for 10–12 minutes, until edges are lightly golden but centers remain pale.

  • Remove from oven and let cookies cool on baking sheets for 5 minutes before transferring to wire racks to cool completely.

  • (Optional) Melt chocolate melts/chips in a microwave or double boiler. Dip cooled cookies halfway into melted chocolate, then place on parchment paper. Immediately decorate with sprinkles before chocolate sets. Allow chocolate to harden completely.

Notes

  • If you don’t have ⅛ cup measurements, use 2 cups plus 2 tablespoons of flour.

  • Butter should be softened to room temperature for best creaming results but not melted or greasy.

  • Milk powder adds richness and tenderness; whole milk powder gives best flavor.

  • Milk is optional and only needed if dough feels crumbly.

  • Store cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week.
