Description

This Potato Base “Pizza” is a delicious, budget-friendly alternative to traditional pizza crust. Made with grated potatoes and topped with cheese and your favorite pizza toppings, it’s crispy, cheesy, and satisfying. A perfect choice for a quick meal or a fun twist on pizza night!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 medium potatoes, peeled and grated
  • 1 medium onion, grated (optional, for extra flavor)
  • 1 egg
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil (for cooking)

For the Toppings:

  • 1/2 cup pizza sauce or marinara
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • Your favorite toppings (pepperoni, vegetables, olives, etc.)
  • Fresh basil (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  • Prepare the Potato Base: Place the grated potatoes (and onion, if using) in a clean kitchen towel or cheesecloth and squeeze out as much moisture as possible. In a large bowl, mix the grated potatoes, egg, flour, salt, pepper, and garlic powder until well combined.
  • Cook the Base: Heat a large, oven-safe skillet over medium heat and add the olive oil. Spread the potato mixture evenly in the skillet, pressing it down with a spatula to create a flat, firm base. Cook for 5–7 minutes, or until the bottom is golden and crispy. Flip the potato base carefully and cook the other side for another 5–7 minutes.
  • Add the Toppings: Spread the pizza sauce over the cooked potato base. Sprinkle with shredded mozzarella cheese and add your desired toppings.
  • Melt the Cheese: Reduce the heat to low, cover the skillet with a lid, and cook for 5–7 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly. Alternatively, transfer the skillet to a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) and bake for 5–7 minutes.
  • Serve: Remove from heat, garnish with fresh basil if desired, and slice into wedges. Serve hot and enjoy this budget-friendly, potato-based “pizza”!

Notes

  • For a lighter option, you can skip the cheese or use a lower-fat version.
  • Feel free to experiment with different toppings like bell peppers, mushrooms, or olives for added flavor.
  • The potato base can also be baked in the oven if you prefer not to cook it in a skillet.
