For the Cake:

  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons black food coloring

For the Cream Cheese Frosting:

  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

For Decoration:

  • Black and white sprinkles
  • Fresh berries (optional)

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  • For the cake, in a large bowl, sift together flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  • In a separate bowl, mix buttermilk, boiling water, vegetable oil, eggs, vanilla extract, and black food coloring. Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined.
  • Divide the batter evenly between the prepared cake pans. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
  • For the cream cheese frosting, in a large bowl, beat together unsalted butter and cream cheese until smooth and creamy. Gradually add powdered sugar, beating until fluffy. Mix in vanilla extract.
  • Frost the cooled cake with cream cheese frosting. Decorate with black and white sprinkles and fresh berries, if desired.

Notes

  • Ensure the boiling water is added carefully to avoid splashes.
  • The cake layers can be made a day ahead and stored in the refrigerator for easier frosting.
