A classic comfort food with a gourmet twist, Bobby Flay’s Salisbury steak features juicy ground beef patties paired with a rich and savory mushroom gravy. Perfect for a hearty, flavorful dinner that feels like a special occasion!

Ingredients

Scale
  • For the Salisbury Steak:
    • 1 lb ground beef (80% lean)
    • ½ cup panko breadcrumbs
    • 2 tbsp tomato sauce or ketchup
    • 1 large egg
    • 1 tsp yellow mustard
    • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
    • 1 tsp dried oregano
    • ½ tsp ground black pepper
    • ½ tsp salt
  • For the Mushroom Gravy:
    • 2 tbsp vegetable oil
    • 1 medium onion, sliced
    • 8 oz button mushrooms, sliced
    • 2 cups low-sodium beef broth
    • ½ tsp onion powder
    • ½ tsp garlic powder
    • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
    • 2 tsp cornstarch mixed with 2 tsp water (slurry)
    • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  • Make the Salisbury Steaks:

    • In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, panko breadcrumbs, tomato sauce (or ketchup), egg, yellow mustard, Worcestershire sauce, oregano, black pepper, and salt. Mix until well combined.
    • Form the mixture into 4 even-sized patties.
  • Cook the Steaks:

    • Heat 2 tbsp of vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the patties and cook for about 4-5 minutes per side, or until they are browned and cooked through. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
  • Make the Mushroom Gravy:

    • In the same skillet, add another 2 tbsp of vegetable oil and sauté the sliced onion until softened, about 3-4 minutes.
    • Add the sliced mushrooms and cook until they release their moisture and become tender, about 5 minutes.
    • Stir in the beef broth, onion powder, garlic powder, and Worcestershire sauce. Bring the mixture to a simmer.
    • To thicken the gravy, add the cornstarch slurry (cornstarch mixed with water) and stir until the gravy thickens, about 1-2 minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  • Combine:

    • Return the cooked Salisbury steaks to the skillet with the mushroom gravy and simmer for 5 minutes, allowing the steaks to absorb the flavors of the gravy.
  • Serve:

    • Serve the Salisbury steaks with a generous amount of mushroom gravy over mashed potatoes, rice, or vegetables.

Notes

  • You can use other types of mushrooms such as cremini or shiitake for a different flavor in the gravy.
  • The Salisbury steaks can be made ahead and reheated in the gravy for even more flavor.
  • If you prefer a thicker gravy, you can adjust the cornstarch slurry to your desired consistency.
