Ingredients
Scale
- For the Salisbury Steak:
- 1 lb ground beef (80% lean)
- ½ cup panko breadcrumbs
- 2 tbsp tomato sauce or ketchup
- 1 large egg
- 1 tsp yellow mustard
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp dried oregano
- ½ tsp ground black pepper
- ½ tsp salt
- For the Mushroom Gravy:
- 2 tbsp vegetable oil
- 1 medium onion, sliced
- 8 oz button mushrooms, sliced
- 2 cups low-sodium beef broth
- ½ tsp onion powder
- ½ tsp garlic powder
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 2 tsp cornstarch mixed with 2 tsp water (slurry)
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
-
Make the Salisbury Steaks:
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, panko breadcrumbs, tomato sauce (or ketchup), egg, yellow mustard, Worcestershire sauce, oregano, black pepper, and salt. Mix until well combined.
- Form the mixture into 4 even-sized patties.
-
Cook the Steaks:
- Heat 2 tbsp of vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the patties and cook for about 4-5 minutes per side, or until they are browned and cooked through. Remove from the skillet and set aside.
-
Make the Mushroom Gravy:
- In the same skillet, add another 2 tbsp of vegetable oil and sauté the sliced onion until softened, about 3-4 minutes.
- Add the sliced mushrooms and cook until they release their moisture and become tender, about 5 minutes.
- Stir in the beef broth, onion powder, garlic powder, and Worcestershire sauce. Bring the mixture to a simmer.
- To thicken the gravy, add the cornstarch slurry (cornstarch mixed with water) and stir until the gravy thickens, about 1-2 minutes. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
-
Combine:
- Return the cooked Salisbury steaks to the skillet with the mushroom gravy and simmer for 5 minutes, allowing the steaks to absorb the flavors of the gravy.
-
Serve:
- Serve the Salisbury steaks with a generous amount of mushroom gravy over mashed potatoes, rice, or vegetables.
Notes
- You can use other types of mushrooms such as cremini or shiitake for a different flavor in the gravy.
- The Salisbury steaks can be made ahead and reheated in the gravy for even more flavor.
- If you prefer a thicker gravy, you can adjust the cornstarch slurry to your desired consistency.
