Description

This Char Siu Chicken recipe is a delicious, Asian-inspired dish featuring tender chicken coated in a sweet and savory glaze made from hoisin sauce, soy sauce, honey, Chinese rice wine, and a blend of aromatic spices. It’s a flavorful and easy-to-make dish that’s perfect for a weeknight dinner or as part of a larger feast.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts or thighs

  • 1/4 cup hoisin sauce

  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce

  • 2 tablespoons honey

  • 1 tablespoon Chinese rice wine (or dry sherry)

  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil

  • 2 cloves garlic, minced

  • 1 teaspoon five-spice powder

  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger

  • Salt and pepper to taste

  • Sliced green onions (for garnish)

Instructions

  • In a small bowl, whisk together the hoisin sauce, soy sauce, honey, Chinese rice wine (or dry sherry), sesame oil, minced garlic, five-spice powder, ground ginger, salt, and pepper to create the marinade.

  • Place the chicken breasts or thighs in a large resealable plastic bag or shallow dish. Pour the marinade over the chicken, ensuring the pieces are fully coated. Seal the bag or cover the dish and refrigerate for at least 1 hour, preferably overnight for the best flavor.

  • Preheat the grill or a grill pan to medium-high heat. Remove the chicken from the marinade, allowing any excess marinade to drip off.

  • Grill the chicken for 5-7 minutes per side, or until the internal temperature reaches 165°F (74°C), and the chicken is golden brown and slightly caramelized from the marinade.

  • Once cooked, remove the chicken from the grill and let it rest for a few minutes.

  • Slice the chicken into strips and garnish with sliced green onions before serving.

Notes

  • You can also cook the chicken in a broiler or oven. If using the oven, preheat to 400°F (200°C) and bake the chicken on a lined baking sheet for about 20-25 minutes, flipping halfway through.

  • For an extra glaze, you can reserve some of the marinade before adding the chicken and simmer it in a saucepan to thicken, then brush it over the cooked chicken.
