Description

Craving a comforting, hearty meal that brings a touch of nostalgia? This Classic American Chop Suey combines ground beef, pasta, and a rich tomato sauce for a dish that’s simple yet satisfying!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 1 green bell pepper, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes
  • 1 can (8 oz) tomato sauce
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional, for a bit of heat)
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 2 cups cooked elbow macaroni
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional)
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  • Cook the Beef:
    • In a large skillet or saucepan, brown the ground beef over medium heat, breaking it up with a spoon. Drain any excess fat.
  • Add Vegetables:
    • Add the chopped onion, bell pepper, and minced garlic to the skillet. Cook until the vegetables are tender, about 5 minutes.
  • Prepare the Sauce:
    • Stir in the diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, oregano, basil, red pepper flakes (if using), salt, and pepper. Let the mixture simmer for 10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.
  • Combine with Pasta:
    • Add the cooked elbow macaroni to the sauce and stir to combine. Cook for an additional 5 minutes, or until the pasta is heated through.
  • Optional Cheese Topping:
    • If desired, sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese over the top and let it melt.
  • Serve:
    • Garnish with fresh parsley if desired. Serve warm and enjoy!
