Ingredients

Scale

For the Steak:

  • 1 lb flank steak or sirloin steak
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder

For the Crispy Onions:

  • 1 large onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • Vegetable oil, for frying

For the Sandwich:

  • 4 sandwich rolls or baguettes
  • 4 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 4 tablespoons Dijon mustard
  • Lettuce leaves
  • Tomato slices

Instructions

  • Prepare the Steak:
    • Preheat your grill or skillet over medium-high heat.
    • Rub the steak with olive oil, salt, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder.
    • Grill or cook the steak for 4-5 minutes per side, or until it reaches your desired level of doneness. Remove from heat and let rest for 5 minutes before slicing thinly against the grain.
  • Make the Crispy Onions:
    • Soak the sliced onions in buttermilk for at least 30 minutes.
    • In a large bowl, mix together the flour, cornstarch, paprika, garlic powder, and salt.
    • Heat a generous amount of vegetable oil in a deep skillet or fryer to 350°F (175°C).
    • Dredge the soaked onions in the flour mixture, shaking off excess.
    • Fry the onions in batches until golden brown and crispy, about 2-3 minutes per batch. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
  • Assemble the Sandwich:
    • Cut the sandwich rolls or baguettes in half and lightly toast if desired.
    • Spread mayonnaise and Dijon mustard on the cut sides of the rolls.
    • Layer the bottom half with lettuce leaves and tomato slices.
    • Add the sliced steak on top of the vegetables.
    • Pile on the crispy onions.
    • Top with the other half of the roll.

Notes

For a spicier kick, add a dash of hot sauce to the mayonnaise or mustard. The crispy onions can be made ahead and stored in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
