Ingredients
For the Gnocchi:
-
1 pound gnocchi (homemade or store-bought, cooked per package directions)
For the White Sauce:
-
1 tablespoon butter
-
1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
-
1 cup milk (2%)
-
Pinch of salt
-
¼ teaspoon dried basil
-
¼ teaspoon dried oregano
Extras:
-
6 tablespoons freshly grated Parmesan cheese
-
1 cup grated Fontal cheese (or Gruyere, Provolone, or Gouda as substitutes)
-
Fresh thyme, for garnish
Instructions
-
Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
-
Cook gnocchi according to package instructions, usually 2–3 minutes. Drain and set aside.
-
In a saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Whisk in the flour and cook for 1 minute to form a roux.
-
Slowly whisk in the milk, stirring constantly until the mixture thickens, about 3–5 minutes.
-
Add salt, basil, and oregano. Stir to combine and remove from heat.
-
In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked gnocchi, white sauce, 4 tablespoons of Parmesan, and the grated Fontal cheese. Mix well.
-
Transfer the mixture to a greased baking dish. Sprinkle the remaining 2 tablespoons of Parmesan on top.
-
Bake for 20–25 minutes, or until bubbly and lightly golden on top.
- Garnish with fresh thyme and serve warm.
Notes
For a richer sauce, substitute part of the milk with heavy cream. Add sautéed mushrooms or spinach for extra depth and nutrition.
