Description

This Crispy Air Fryer Chicken Karaage is a healthier twist on the traditional Japanese fried chicken, made in an air fryer for a crispy, golden texture without the excess oil. Marinated in a flavorful combination of garlic, ginger, soy sauce, sake, and mirin, this dish is full of savory umami flavors, making it perfect for a snack or main course.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb boneless, skinless chicken thighs
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp ginger, grated
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp sake
  • 1 tbsp mirin
  • 1/2 cup potato starch
  • Cooking spray

Instructions

  • Cut the chicken thighs into bite-sized pieces and place in a bowl.
  • Add the garlic, ginger, soy sauce, sake, and mirin to the bowl and mix well to coat the chicken.
  • Cover the bowl and marinate the chicken in the fridge for at least 30 minutes.
  • Preheat the air fryer to 400°F (200°C).
  • Place the potato starch in a shallow dish.
  • Dredge the marinated chicken pieces in the potato starch, shaking off any excess.
  • Lightly coat the air fryer basket with cooking spray.
  • Place the chicken in the basket in a single layer, making sure not to overcrowd.
  • Air fry the chicken at 400°F (200°C) for 10-12 minutes, flipping halfway through, until golden and crispy.
  • Serve hot and enjoy!

Notes

  • You can substitute potato starch with cornstarch for a similar result.
  • For a spicier version, add a pinch of chili flakes to the marinade.
  • Make sure not to overcrowd the air fryer basket for the crispiest results.
  • For extra crunch, you can double coat the chicken by dipping it back into the starch after the first coat.
