Description

A flavorful twist on the classic sloppy joe, this Cajun-inspired version features tender chicken in a spicy, savory sauce, served on a soft bun for a perfect meal.

Ingredients

Scale
    • 8 oz (225g) rice noodles (or lo mein/udon noodles)

    • 1 lb (450g) beef sirloin or flank steak, thinly sliced

    • 2 tbsp cornstarch

    • 3 tbsp vegetable oil, divided

    • 1 red bell pepper, thinly sliced

    • 2 cups (120g) broccoli florets

    • 3 green onions, sliced (plus extra for garnish)

    • 2 garlic cloves, minced

    • 1 tbsp fresh ginger, grated

For the Sticky Sauce:

    • 1/4 cup (60ml) soy sauce

    • 2 tbsp hoisin sauce

    • 2 tbsp honey or brown sugar

    • 2 tbsp rice vinegar (or lime juice)

    • 1 tbsp sesame oil

    • 1/4 tsp red pepper flakes (optional, for heat)

Instructions

  • Cook rice noodles according to the package instructions, drain, and set aside.

  • Toss thinly sliced beef with cornstarch to coat evenly.

  • Heat 1 tbsp of vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add beef and cook until browned, about 3-4 minutes. Remove from the skillet and set aside.

  • In the same skillet, add another tbsp of vegetable oil and sauté the bell pepper, broccoli, and green onions until tender, about 5 minutes.

  • Add garlic and ginger, and cook for another 1-2 minutes until fragrant.

  • In a small bowl, whisk together soy sauce, hoisin sauce, honey (or brown sugar), rice vinegar, sesame oil, and red pepper flakes to make the sauce.

  • Return the beef to the skillet, pour the sauce over the mixture, and toss to coat. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes to heat through and thicken the sauce.

  • Toss the cooked noodles with the beef and vegetable mixture. Serve immediately, garnished with extra green onions.

Notes

  • For a spicier dish, increase the amount of red pepper flakes.

  • You can substitute the beef with chicken, pork, or tofu for a different twist.

  • Serve with steamed vegetables or a side of crispy fries for a full meal.
