For the Fried Prawns:

  • 1 lb large prawns, peeled and deveined
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • Vegetable oil, for frying
  • Fresh lemon wedges (optional, for serving)

For the Garlicky Hot Pepper Sauce:

  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 1/4 cup hot sauce (your choice)
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional, for extra heat)
  • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  • Prepare the Prawns:
    • Pat the prawns dry with paper towels. In a shallow dish, whisk together the flour, cornstarch, garlic powder, paprika, cayenne pepper, salt, and black pepper.
  • Coat the Prawns:
    • Dip each prawn in the beaten eggs, then dredge them in the flour mixture, pressing lightly to adhere. Shake off any excess flour.
  • Fry the Prawns:
    • In a large skillet or deep fryer, heat vegetable oil over medium-high heat. Once the oil is hot (about 350°F/175°C), fry the prawns in batches until golden brown and crispy, about 2-3 minutes per side. Remove and drain on paper towels.
  • Make the Garlicky Hot Pepper Sauce:
    • In a small saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and sauté until fragrant, about 1-2 minutes. Stir in the hot sauce, butter, honey, soy sauce, and red pepper flakes. Cook for another 2-3 minutes until the sauce is slightly thickened.
  • Serve:
    • Drizzle the garlicky hot pepper sauce over the fried prawns or serve it on the side as a dipping sauce. Garnish with fresh parsley and lemon wedges if desired. Enjoy your crispy prawns with a zesty kick!

Notes

For a lighter version, you can bake the prawns at 400°F (200°C) for 12-15 minutes, turning halfway through. This dish pairs well with a side of steamed rice or a fresh green salad.
