Ingredients

  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 1 1/2 tsp ground ginger
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground cloves
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup molasses
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 cup hot water

Instructions

  • Preheat the Oven: Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×9 inch baking pan.
  • Mix Dry Ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, and salt.
  • Cream Butter and Sugar: In a separate large bowl, cream together butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  • Add Molasses and Egg: Beat in molasses and egg until well combined.
  • Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
  • Add Hot Water: Stir in hot water until the batter is smooth.
  • Bake the Cake: Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake for 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  • Cool and Frost: Allow the cake to cool completely before frosting.

Notes

  • You can add chopped crystallized ginger to the batter for extra zing.
