Description

Ingredients

  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp ground ginger
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp ground cloves
  • 1/2 cup molasses
  • 1/2 cup hot water
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1 large egg

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9-inch round cake pan.
  • In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, ginger, cinnamon, and cloves.
  • In a separate bowl, mix together molasses, hot water, vegetable oil, brown sugar, and egg.
  • Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, stirring until well combined.
  • Pour the batter into the prepared cake pan and bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  • Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

  • For a richer frosting, you can add a little cream cheese or butter to the cinnamon molasses frosting.
  • To make the cake even more festive, top with candied ginger or a sprinkle of cinnamon.
