Description

Soft, fluffy, and slightly sweet, this classic homemade bread recipe has been passed down for generations. With a tender crumb and golden crust, it’s perfect for sandwiches, toast, or simply enjoying warm with butter. Easy to make and deeply comforting, it’s the kind of bread that feels like home.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 tablespoon dry active yeast

  • 5 cups all-purpose flour

  • 2 tablespoons oil (vegetable or canola oil recommended)

  • 2 ½ cups warm water (about 110°F / 43°C)

  • ¼ cup sugar

  • 1 ¼ teaspoons salt

Instructions

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Stir to dissolve and let sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.

  • Add the oil and salt, then gradually stir in the flour, one cup at a time, mixing until a soft dough forms.

  • Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic.

  • Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a clean towel or plastic wrap, and let rise in a warm place for 1–1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.

  • Punch down the dough and divide it into two equal portions. Shape into loaves and place in two greased 9×5-inch loaf pans.

  • Cover and let rise again for 30–45 minutes, or until the dough has risen about 1 inch above the rim of the pans.

  • Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).

  • Bake for 25–30 minutes or until the tops are golden brown and the loaves sound hollow when tapped.

  • Remove from pans and cool on a wire rack. Slice once cooled, or enjoy warm with butter.

Notes

  • This recipe makes 2 standard loaves (16 slices total).

  • You can substitute 1–2 cups of all-purpose flour with whole wheat flour for a heartier texture.

  • Bread freezes well—wrap tightly and freeze for up to 2 months.

  • Optional: Brush the tops with melted butter after baking for a softer crust.
