Description

These Greek Chicken Gyros are a flavorful and healthy take on the classic Greek dish, with tender marinated chicken served in warm pita bread and topped with a refreshing homemade tzatziki sauce, fresh veggies, and crumbled feta. Perfect for a quick weeknight meal or a crowd-pleasing dinner.

Ingredients

Scale
  • For the Chicken Marinade:

    • 1 lb chicken breast, thinly sliced

    • 3 tablespoons olive oil

    • 2 tablespoons lemon juice

    • 3 cloves garlic, minced

    • 1 teaspoon dried oregano

    • 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin

    • Salt and pepper to taste

    For the Tzatziki Sauce:

    • 1 cup Greek yogurt

    • 1/2 cucumber, grated and drained

    • 1 clove garlic, minced

    • 1 tablespoon lemon juice

    • 1 tablespoon olive oil

    • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh dill (or mint)

    • Salt and pepper to taste

    For the Gyros:

    • 4 pita bread rounds

    • 1/2 cup chopped tomatoes

    • 1/2 cup sliced red onions

    • 1/2 cup chopped cucumber

    • 1/4 cup crumbled feta cheese

    • 1/4 cup chopped parsley

Instructions

  • Marinate the Chicken: In a bowl, combine olive oil, lemon juice, garlic, oregano, cumin, salt, and pepper. Add the sliced chicken breast and toss to coat evenly. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes (or up to 2 hours) to marinate.

  • Prepare the Tzatziki Sauce: In a small bowl, combine Greek yogurt, grated cucumber (squeezed to remove excess moisture), minced garlic, lemon juice, olive oil, dill (or mint), salt, and pepper. Stir to combine and refrigerate until ready to serve.

  • Cook the Chicken: Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the marinated chicken and cook for 5-7 minutes, or until fully cooked and golden brown.

  • Assemble the Gyros: Warm the pita bread rounds in a skillet or oven. Once warm, layer the pita with a generous amount of tzatziki sauce. Add cooked chicken, then top with chopped tomatoes, sliced red onions, cucumber, crumbled feta cheese, and chopped parsley.

  • Serve: Roll up the pita to encase the ingredients and serve immediately.

Notes

  • You can swap out the chicken breast for chicken thighs if you prefer darker meat.

  • The tzatziki sauce can be made a day ahead and stored in the refrigerator for added flavor.

  • If you prefer a spicier gyros, add a drizzle of hot sauce or a sprinkle of red pepper flakes.
