Description

A quick, nutritious, and family-friendly ground turkey with potatoes recipe perfect for weeknight dinners. This one-pan dish combines tender lean turkey and hearty potatoes with flavorful onions, garlic, and optional herbs and spices for a comforting, budget-friendly meal ready in under 30 minutes.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 1 lb lean ground turkey
  • 1 lb Yukon gold or red potatoes, washed and diced
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tbsp olive oil or butter
  • Salt, to taste
  • Black pepper, to taste

Optional Fresh Herbs & Spices

  • 2 tbsp fresh parsley or rosemary, chopped
  • 1 tsp paprika (optional)
  • 1/2 tsp ground cumin (optional)
  • 1/4 tsp chili flakes (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the potatoes: Wash and dice the potatoes into even bite-sized pieces to ensure they cook evenly and quickly. Parboil them in boiling water for about 5 minutes if you want to speed up the cooking process, then drain and set aside.
  2. Brown the ground turkey: Heat olive oil or butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the ground turkey, breaking it apart with a spoon, and season with salt and pepper. Cook until browned and cooked through, about 6-8 minutes. Transfer the turkey to a plate and set aside.
  3. Sauté onions and garlic: In the same skillet, add a bit more oil if needed. Add the chopped onions and sauté until translucent, about 4-5 minutes. Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
  4. Cook the potatoes: Add the diced potatoes to the skillet with the onions and garlic. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until the potatoes are tender and golden on the edges, about 15 minutes. If the potatoes begin to stick, add a splash of water or cover to steam and soften.
  5. Combine and season: Return the cooked ground turkey to the skillet and mix everything together. Add your choice of fresh herbs and spices (such as parsley, rosemary, paprika, cumin, or chili flakes), adjusting salt and pepper to taste. Let everything cook together on low heat for a few minutes to enhance and meld the flavors.

Notes

  • Don’t overcrowd the pan: cook potatoes and turkey in batches if needed for proper browning.
  • Use fresh herbs added at the end to preserve flavor and aroma.
  • Drain excess fat from the turkey if too much liquid is released to avoid soggy potatoes.
  • Cut potatoes into uniform sizes for consistent cooking.
  • Let the dish rest for a few minutes before serving to allow flavors to settle.
