Ingredients
Scale
- 1 lb hanger steak
- 4 ciabatta rolls or hoagie buns
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 1 red bell pepper, thinly sliced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/2 cup mayonnaise
- 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
- 1 tablespoon horseradish sauce (optional, for a kick)
- 4 slices provolone or Swiss cheese
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- Fresh arugula or baby spinach (optional)
Instructions
- Prepare the Steak:
- Season the hanger steak with salt and pepper on both sides. Heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Sear the steak for 4-5 minutes per side, or until it reaches your desired doneness. Let it rest for 5 minutes, then slice thinly against the grain.
- Cook the Onions and Peppers:
- In the same skillet, add the sliced onions, red bell pepper, and minced garlic. Sauté for 5-7 minutes, until the vegetables are soft and slightly caramelized. Season with a pinch of salt and pepper.
- Assemble the Sandwich:
- Mix the mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, and horseradish sauce (if using) in a small bowl. Spread the sauce generously on the cut sides of the ciabatta rolls. Layer with sliced hanger steak, sautéed onions and peppers, and a slice of cheese.
- Toast the Sandwich:
- Preheat the broiler. Place the assembled sandwiches on a baking sheet and broil for 2-3 minutes, just until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
- Add Greens (Optional):
- Top with fresh arugula or baby spinach for an extra layer of flavor and crunch.
- Serve:
- Serve the hanger steak sandwiches warm, and enjoy the perfect blend of savory steak, creamy sauce, and melted cheese!
Notes
For added depth of flavor, marinate the hanger steak in a mixture of olive oil, garlic, and herbs for a few hours before cooking. This sandwich pairs perfectly with a side of crispy fries or a fresh salad.
