Description

Enjoy the crispy, sweet perfection of Krispy Kreme-style doughnuts made from scratch! These homemade doughnuts are soft, fluffy, and coated with a smooth glaze, perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • For the Doughnuts:
    • 3 tbsp milk
    • 3 tbsp boiling water
    • 1 tsp dry active yeast
    • 8 oz all-purpose flour (a little under 2 cups, but it’s best to weigh it)
    • 1 1/2 oz sugar (about 3 tablespoons)
    • 1 egg
    • 1 oz butter, cold to room temperature (avoid melting)
    • Dash of salt
    • Enough oil to cover the bottom few inches of a wok or a deep fryer
  • For the Glaze:
    • 1/3 cup butter
    • 2 cups confectioners’ sugar
    • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
    • 4 tablespoons hot water (or as needed)

Instructions

  • In a small bowl, combine the milk, boiling water, and dry active yeast. Stir and let it sit for about 5 minutes until the mixture becomes frothy.
  • In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, salt, and egg. Add the yeast mixture and mix until it forms a dough.
  • Add the cold butter and knead the dough until it becomes smooth and elastic (about 5-7 minutes).
  • Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rise for about 1-2 hours, or until doubled in size.
  • Roll out the dough on a lightly floured surface to about 1/2 inch thickness. Use a doughnut cutter to cut out the doughnuts and their holes.
  • Heat the oil in a wok or deep fryer to 350°F (175°C).
  • Fry the doughnuts in the hot oil, turning them once, for about 1-2 minutes per side, until golden brown.
  • Remove the doughnuts from the oil and place them on paper towels to drain excess oil.
  • For the glaze: melt the butter in a bowl. Stir in the confectioners’ sugar and vanilla extract, and gradually add hot water until the glaze reaches your desired consistency.
  • Dip the warm doughnuts into the glaze, ensuring they are well-coated. Place on a cooling rack to let the glaze set.

Notes

  • Ensure the oil temperature stays consistent at 350°F to achieve the perfect crispness.
  • You can also use a doughnut pan if you prefer to bake the doughnuts instead of frying them.
