Description

This classic Old Fashioned Goulash is a hearty, comforting dish filled with savory ground beef, tender elbow macaroni, and a rich tomato sauce. It’s perfect for a family meal or a cozy dinner, with the option to top with melted cheddar cheese for extra flavor.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 can (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes, undrained
  • 1 can (8 oz) tomato sauce
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 2 teaspoons Italian seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 cups elbow macaroni
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese (optional)

Instructions

  • Brown the Beef:
In a large pot, brown the ground beef over medium heat. Break it apart with a spoon as it cooks. Once browned and cooked, drain the excess fat. Add the chopped onion and minced garlic, sautéing for about 3 minutes until the onion is softened.

  • Add the Tomatoes and Seasonings:
Stir in the diced tomatoes (undrained), tomato sauce, beef broth, Italian seasoning, paprika, salt, and pepper. Bring to a simmer and let the flavors combine.

  • Cook the Pasta:
Add the elbow macaroni to the pot and stir everything together. Cover the pot and cook for 12–15 minutes, or until the pasta is tender and the sauce has thickened. Stir occasionally to prevent the pasta from sticking.

  • Serve and Enjoy:
Remove from heat and serve immediately. If desired, top with shredded cheddar cheese for an extra layer of flavor.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, you can add a pinch of red pepper flakes to spice things up.
  • If you prefer a thicker goulash, let it simmer for a little longer until the sauce reaches your desired consistency.
