Ingredients

Scale

For the Cake:

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 cup vegetable oil
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons orange zest
  • 1/2 cup freshly squeezed orange juice

For the Frosting:

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 4 cups powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon orange zest

Instructions

  • Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  • Prepare Dry Ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Set aside.
  • Mix Wet Ingredients: In a large bowl, beat together the sugar, buttermilk, and oil until well combined. Add the eggs, one at a time, mixing well after each addition.
  • Combine Ingredients: Stir in the vanilla extract, orange zest, and freshly squeezed orange juice until the batter is smooth and fragrant. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
  • Bake the Cakes: Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  • Cool the Cakes: Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  • Make the Frosting: In a mixing bowl, beat together the softened butter and cream cheese until creamy. Gradually add the powdered sugar, vanilla extract, and orange zest, beating until smooth and fluffy.
  • Assemble the Cake: Once the cakes are completely cool, frost the top of one layer, place the second layer on top, and frost the entire cake with the remaining frosting.

Notes

For added flavor, you can garnish with additional orange zest or candied orange slices.
