Description

These Philly Cheese Steak Sloppy Joes are a delicious and indulgent twist on the classic sloppy joe. Packed with savory ground beef, vegetables, and melted provolone cheese, this recipe combines all the flavors of a Philly cheesesteak in a messy, flavorful sandwich. Perfect for a hearty weeknight meal or casual gathering!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 1 green bell pepper, diced
  • 8 ounces mushrooms, chopped (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 6 slices provolone cheese
  • 4 hamburger buns

Instructions

  • Cook the beef and vegetables: Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it into crumbles. Drain any excess grease. Add the diced onion, bell pepper, and mushrooms (if using) to the skillet. Cook for 3-4 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the vegetables are softened.
  • Season and create the sauce: Stir in the ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix well to coat the beef and vegetables. In a small bowl, whisk together the cornstarch and beef broth until smooth. Pour the mixture into the skillet and stir to combine. Let simmer for 2-3 minutes until the sauce thickens.
  • Melt the cheese: Reduce the heat to low and lay the slices of provolone cheese evenly over the beef mixture. Cover the skillet with a lid and allow the cheese to melt, about 1-2 minutes.
  • Assemble the Sloppy Joes: Toast the hamburger buns for added texture (optional). Spoon the cheesy beef mixture onto the bottom half of each bun and top with the other half.
  • Serve and enjoy: Serve warm with a side of fries, chips, or a simple green salad. For a complete meal, pair with crispy onion rings, coleslaw, or roasted vegetables.

Notes

  • Feel free to add more veggies, like sautéed spinach or tomatoes, to the beef mixture for added flavor.
  • If you prefer a different cheese, provolone can be swapped with mozzarella or cheddar.
  • For a lighter version, you can use ground turkey or chicken instead of beef.
