- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1/2 cup boiling water
- 1 cup M&M’s (for baking)
- 1 cup chocolate chips (for frosting)
For the Frosting:
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 3 cups powdered sugar
- 1/2 cup cocoa powder
- 1/4 cup milk
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup M&M’s (for decoration)
Instructions
For the Cake:
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour three 8-inch round cake pans.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and cocoa powder.
- In a large bowl, beat together granulated sugar, brown sugar, and softened butter until light and fluffy.
- Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Mix in vanilla extract.
- Gradually add dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with buttermilk. Mix until just combined.
- Stir in boiling water until the batter is smooth. Gently fold in M&M’s.
- Divide the batter evenly among the prepared cake pans and smooth the tops.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Let cakes cool in pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
For the Frosting:
- Beat softened butter until creamy.
- Gradually add powdered sugar and cocoa powder, mixing well.
- Add milk and vanilla extract and beat until smooth and fluffy.
Assembling the Cake:
- Once cakes are completely cool, spread frosting between layers and over the top and sides of the cake.
- Decorate with additional M&M’s on top.

- Cooling: Ensure the cakes are completely cooled before frosting to prevent melting.
- Consistency: If the frosting is too thick, add a little more milk to reach the desired consistency.
