Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 cup chopped nuts (optional)

Instructions

  • Prepare the Dough:
    In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt. Set aside. In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter, granulated sugar, brown sugar, and vanilla extract until creamy. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
  • Combine and Add the Chocolate Chips:
    Gradually add the flour mixture to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Stir in the chocolate chips and nuts (if using).
  • Shape the Cookies:
    Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Drop rounded tablespoons of dough onto an ungreased baking sheet, spacing them about 2 inches apart.
  • Bake the Cookies:
    Bake the cookies for 9-11 minutes, or until golden brown. For softer cookies, bake on the lower end of the time range; for crispier cookies, bake a bit longer. Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 2 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
  • Serve:
    Enjoy these classic chocolate chip cookies warm, with a glass of milk, or store them in an airtight container for later.

For a fun twist, try adding different types of chocolate chips or mixing in dried fruit or shredded coconut.
